Giving Outrage a Bad Name

There is no greater outrage for me than when truth and facts become irrelevant. Larry Gellman's claim that Anger and Outrage is America's Fastest Growing Religion is pretty much right on the money.

But he missed a few points. First, outrage is justified - even necessary - when the facts, the context and historical perspective of an issue are considered. Which is what I hope I've been talking about for the past eight years here at Outrage.com.

It's the manufactured outrage, the faux outrage, the mindless outrage, the bigoted outrage, the bogus outrage that has become the expression of a religion - not a religion unto itself. And that it stems from intentional lies and distortions of truth in a very calculated and planned propaganda machine is well...outrageous.

So outrage can't be a religion - outrage and anger are creed and dogma of what is truly America's religion - The Church of the Self-Centered, Unaccountable, Ignorant and Lazy American. With Newt Gingrich, Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly as the Holy Trinity. And maybe it's not so new after all - we just have so many more communication vehicles today that showcase it so well we can't hide it any longer.
